Guitar Techs!

In 2013, an old friend of mine, Johnny Balmer at Alchemy Audio contacted me with the idea of building a device to aid the fine folk who lovingly take care of guitar and bass amplifiers! (How could I refuse...?)

We engaged in some discussion over the matter, from various types of wood, to costs, efficiency and time. Eventually, found something and sent the paperwork to me. All the notes/measurements were metric, so I sat down and converted before I went about programming the design to be carved out via the CNC machine. For the prototypes, I used 3/4" Aspen plywood.

Once they were cut out, I began the assembly. I wanted the first ones to be nearly indestructible, so I ran a bead of wood-glue along the edges, drilled the pilot holes and then screwed in the wood screws.

The Aspen plywood worked out really well~! There may be some other wood selections later on, but for now, we believe this is the best choice. It's really quite durable. It's the kind of wood that work-bench's are made out of!

Here is a profile view of the cradle, sans knobs. The slotted arcs will be the guides for the knobs to tilt the amp head as needed by the tech.

Three prototypes completed~! You can see the knobs and handles in various positions to allow the tech the ability to adjust the angle to their preference.

Here is a different view - you can see the adjustment knob in the bottom, which allows for the top-plate to slide back and forth, to fit amp head's ranging from 10" to 22" (I think).

The first one literally took an entire work day to cut out and then sand down. As anyone who creates things will tell you; it generally gets easier the more you go...and so naturally, by the time I did the third one I had reduced my time to approximately 66%~! I think they turned out pretty nice, and whereas I feel that this 3/4" aspen is the way to go, if you would like one made in a different hardwood of your choice, I think Johnny and I would be happy to accommodate your request~!
